About the Opportunity
The City of Oxnard is looking for a full-time Assistant City Engineer to join our team in Oxnard, California. This is an in-office position, working a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off.
Reporting to the City Engineer, you will exercise technical and functional supervision over in-house design engineering, surveying, technical, administrative, and support staff.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Managing in-house design and administrative teams, providing direction and technical guidance
- Overseeing the Capital Improvement Program (CIP), including 5-year CIP document, design services, and managing complex projects
- Representing the division as the primary liaison at Design Advisory Committee and Planning Commission meetings
- Actively participating in professional group meetings to stay updated on engineering trends
- Developing and maintaining the City's Public Works Engineering Procedures Manual
- Establishing and fostering positive relationships with staff and external contacts
- Supervising staff, including evaluations, training coordination, and overseeing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures
- Managing activities related to infrastructure improvement plan review, maintenance, construction, design, and traffic engineering
- Consulting and providing information to architects, engineers, developers, consultants, and outside agencies
- Overseeing the preparation, review, and delivery of technical engineering documents
- Providing project management, resource scheduling, and attending, facilitating, and presenting at meetings

About You
To qualify, candidates need a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or directly related field, and a minimum 5 years' professional engineering and/or construction/project management experience and 2 years' supervisory experience.
The following licenses/registrations are required (if you hold licences/registrations from other states, you must be able to apply for and obtain licences/registrations in California):
- A valid California Professional Engineering Civil Registration (obtained within the first twelve months of employment)
- A valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
The following skills and experience will be strong attributes:
- Proven ability in organizing tasks, prioritizing assignments, and managing workflows efficiently
- Proficient in civil engineering principles and project management, including budget administration and financial oversight
- Demonstrated capability as a liaison and subject-matter expert
- Proven track record in ensuring compliance with laws, codes, regulations, and contracts
- Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills

- A 3% salary increase for all employees, effective the first full pay period of July 2024 as per the OMMA MOU, setting the new salary range at $118,307.18 to $189,291.53
